Why I missed professional newborn photography | Rockhampton

by | Feb 11, 2026

When I was pregnant with my first baby, professional newborn photos in Rockhampton weren’t something I spent much time thinking about.

Not because I didn’t want them — but because I assumed I’d organise it later.
Once she arrived.
Once I knew how I felt.
Once things settled down.

I told myself I had time.

And if you’re pregnant with your first baby, you’re probably feeling the same way.

Why newborn photos don’t feel urgent the first time

When you’re preparing for a baby, your attention is pulled in a hundred different directions.

There are medical appointments, hospital bags, car seats, prams, cots — and endless opinions about what you must have. Compared to all of that, newborn photos can feel like something nice, but not necessary. Something you can come back to later.

That’s where I was.

I thought I’d wait and see how I felt after birth before making any decisions (because how could I possibly know how my recovery would be?).

A mother and father hold their newborn baby between them. Both are gently smiling.

What actually happened after she arrived

What I didn’t anticipate was how overwhelming those first weeks would feel.

The days blurred together.
I was learning how to care for a tiny human while recovering myself.
Even small decisions felt heavy.

Organising photos — researching, enquiring, planning — suddenly felt like far too much.

So I didn’t do it.

It wasn’t until my first baby was around one year old that I finally came up for air and booked a session.

And while I’m grateful for those photos… I carry a quiet sadness too.

Because I don’t have many images I’m proud of from those earliest days.
Images of us together.
Me as a brand-new mum — still finding my feet, learning and completely in love.

“I have a camera — I’ll just take a few myself”

I also told myself something else…

I have a camera.
I can put the timer on.
I’ll capture a few moments myself.

And technically, I could.

But what I didn’t realise at the time was this:
when you’re the one setting the camera up, checking the frame, watching the timer — you’re not fully present.

Your mind is split.

Instead of sinking into the moment — feeling the weight of her in my arms, breathing in her newborn smell, marvelling at her beautiful features — I was thinking ‘was that in focus?’

What I wanted, but didn’t know how to ask for then, was photos of the two of us where my attention wasn’t divided.
Where my love for her was captured.

What professional newborn photography in Rockhampton really gives you

Professional newborn photography isn’t just about having “nice photos.”

It’s about creating space for you to be in the moment — not managing it.

It’s about someone else holding the responsibility so you don’t have to:

  • planning the timing
  • guiding the session gently
  • knowing how to work around feeding, settling, and rest

And importantly — it’s about making sure you are in the photos too.

Not as an afterthought.
Not rushed.
Not distracted.

But present. Connected. Loving on your baby exactly as you are.

If you’re unsure — that’s okay

The reason I encourage parents to plan newborn photos during pregnancy is because it’s easier to think when you’re not already in it.

When everything is planned early, it eliminates the anxiety. Everything is simply taken care of for you — because when you’re learning to be a mum, I don’t want to put anything else on your plate. I want you to be able to focus your whole world on them.

The photos will capture more than just how tiny they are. They’ll hold your feelings — the closeness, the softness, and a love you’ve never felt before.

If you want the real memories of this season protected, and something tangible to hold onto long after it’s passed, I’m here to gently guide you through it.
