Newborn Photography: Tips for capturing your baby’s first moments

by | Jul 9, 2025

If you’ve just had a baby (or are counting down the days), you’re probably hearing a million opinions about feeding, sleeping, settling… and maybe even when to book newborn photos.

So let me make it easy for you:

If you want to remember the way your baby curled into your chest like they were still tucked up in the womb — those sleepy, soft, milk-drunk days — then the first two weeks are ideal. This is when they’re still in that dreamlike newborn stage: limbs tucked in, eyes often closed, and content to be wrapped, held, and gently posed.

But that’s not the only right time.

Some parents prefer to wait a little. To give themselves space to adjust. To soak up the newborn bubble without anything on the calendar. And that’s completely okay, too.

What matters most is choosing the timing that feels right for you.

Relax and Enjoy the Process

It’s normal to feel a little nervous or overwhelmed before your newborn session. You’ve just had a baby, and there’s a lot going on! But the more relaxed and comfortable you feel, the better the photos will turn out.

That’s why I gently guide you every step of the way – from the moment you enquire, to the day of your session, right through to when we design heirloom pieces to preserve your memories.

Your newborn session experience will feel gentle, relaxed and easy, so you can trust I’ll be capturing the most gorgeous photos of you and your baby.

What to Expect from Your Session

Whether you’re coming into my studio or I’m meeting you at home or at the hospital, your session is about gently capturing your newborn bubble.
You don’t need to bring a suitcase full of outfits or Pinterest boards of props. In fact, the simpler the better.

Soft, neutral tones always photograph beautifully — a favourite swaddle, a plain onesie, bare skin against yours. These little details become the heart of your photos, not the background noise.

And if your baby needs a feed or a nappy change in the middle of it all? That’s part of it. You’re not on a timer. This is a slow, gentle session with room for pauses, cuddles, and the reality of life with a newborn.

You’re Not Just Booking Photos — You’re Creating Memories

This isn’t about perfect poses or picture-perfect moments. It’s about the way you hold your baby and look at them with overwhelming love. The quiet connection between you. The awe in your eyes.

Because when the fog of the newborn phase lifts, these images will help you remember what it felt like.

If you’re wanting to book newborn photos and want portraits that are honest, timeless, and close to your heart, I’d love to chat. I’ll help you figure out the right timing, talk you through how to prepare, and guide you every step of the way.
