What to wear for family photos – Alice Rye Photography

by | Aug 12, 2022

You’ve researched your favourite Rockhampton photographer, you’ve booked them and then it dawns on you…

What do we wear for family photos?

It’s one thing to dress yourself but when you have to coordinate with your kids as well, it’s enough to want to curl up in bed and watch re-runs of ‘Modern family’ (yes I did this!).

1. Start with one print and work from there

It’s the cheats way to style – Choose one outfit that has a subtle print and work all the others around it.

If it has multiple colours, you can use those when deciding on pieces for the rest of the family because then you look like you belong together without becoming matchy-matchy.

Pinterest has some great colour palettes which can help you narrow down your look.

2. Complimentary colours

Have you ever studied a colour wheel? It’s a great place to start when deciding on what tones you want to bring to your images.

Picking colours that are opposite to each other (complimentary colours) will ensure your outfits look harmonious and exciting.

Your eye can travel gently across the whole image and you’re not distracted by dad’s questionable choice of shorts – this has never happened, just saying ;).

A toddler laughs at her father as she holds onto his shirt collar. He smiles back at her.
A young girls lies across her parents' laps as they cuddle her. Her eyes are closed but she's smiling.

3. Look and feel like ‘you’

No family is like yours, so why would you want to dress like anyone else?

I want you to look and feel like you. This means staying true to what feels good.

If you never wear dresses, then don’t choose one for your family photos. If you’re a hang out at the beach and surf kind of family, then casual dress is probably best suited to you.

We’re creating images that will adorne your walls for years to come, so how do you want to see yourself? In clothes that made you feel self-conscious or in ones that made you feel your best.

4. Texture

There is often a huge focus on colour but the textures in your clothing have just as much baring on the images we create.

Mixing linen with chunky knits, leather shoes and belts, silk scarves and tulle all help to add interest to your photos.

Think about the kind of look you’re going for and keep the textures in mind. For a soft, feminine feel, a tulle skirt with a cotton t-shirt looks beautiful.

For a more earthy design, corduroy pants with a linen shirt or soft flowy dress can look gorgeous.

5. Light and dark tones

You can add a great deal of diversity to your photos by adding light and dark clothing to the mix.

It adds depth to your portraits and helps distinguish one person from another.

It’s also a great way to add balance to an individual’s outfit – think chocolate brown pants (dark) on your toddler and a cream chunky cardigan (light).

6. Have fun with it

This is meant to be a really enjoyable part of your family photography experience.

It’s about showcasing the many and varied personalities in your beautiful family and saying ‘this is us’.

Come as your authentic self and your images will reflect the love, laughter and magic of this season.

I also give you plenty of information once you’ve booked your session. If you’d love to have images of your family with you actually in them, just head to my contact page to book in.
