When you don’t feel like yourself: Why relaxed maternity and newborn photography matters

by | Apr 23, 2025

You look in the mirror and don’t quite recognise the body reflected back to you.

It has changed so much in such a short space of time and you worry what it will be like once the baby is born. You have no idea what to expect and it all feels overwhelming.

But in just a few months – or even a year or two – you’ll realise that those anxious feelings were part of your journey into parenthood. And it’s a time you’ll want to remember forever.

Relaxed maternity photography at home: ‘I want beautiful photos but I don’t want to feel awkward…’

This is something I hear from expecting parents all the time.

You love the idea of a Rockhampton maternity and newborn photography session but worry about feeling stiff, posed or looking unflattering. Maybe you’re not sure what to wear, how to stand or whether your home is ‘photo-worthy’.

Let me tell you a secret: Your home is the most meaningful place to document this journey.

Home is where your toddler plonks themselves down against your belly and orders you to read their favourite book for the hundredth time.

It’s where you imagine what life is going to be like once a new baby joins the family. And it’s where you spend hours rocking back and forth as you settle your newborn, and whisper how much you love them.

These are the moments that matter most – and they deserve to be captured in the place you feel most at ease…home.

Newborn Photography Rockhampton: ‘What if I don’t feel up to a newborn session after birth?’

Having a baby is a massive change for your body and it can takes years to recover. If you’re having your first baby, the hormones and emotions can come as a shock.

As a mum of three, I know how challenging those early days are but how in years to come, you wish you could have more memories of that precious time.

That’s why at-home newborn sessions can be a great way to keep the whole family feeling relaxed and taken care of without missing out on those newborn photos.

A mother holds her newborn baby against her chest and has some precious skin-on-skin time.
A newborn session is a beautiful chance to document skin-on-skin with your baby to capture the details of how small they are.

You don’t need to pack a bag or leave the house – just relax in your own space, snuggle your beautiful baby and I’ll take care of everything else.

I create a calm, unhurried environment for your session, where we take breaks for feeding, changing nappies and a bit of play for toddlers or other kiddos.

We will have already planned your newborn session ahead of time, so everything feels organised and nothing comes as a surprise. So you can focus on protecting this time to bond with your baby.

Newborn photos: ‘But what if my home isn’t ‘perfect’ for photos?’

It doesn’t have to be. I promise.

The focus is never on how styled or spotless your home is—it’s on the connection, the love, the realness of this season. I use soft, natural light and angles that highlight the warmth of your space, turning even the simplest corners into something magical.

Your home, as it is, is the perfect backdrop for these memories. It’s where your family’s story is unfolding, and that’s what makes it so special.

A maternity and newborn session that feels like you

Before your session, I take the time to get to know your family, ensuring that everyone feels at ease and we capture portraits that truly reflect who you are.

We’ll plan the details together, and I’ll provide helpful tips in the lead-up, so you know exactly what to expect and feel confident throughout the process.

Sessions with me are relaxed, warm, and led by your baby and children, creating a calm, enjoyable experience for the whole family.

And my support doesn’t end there. I’ll guide you through the design process to create artwork from your session, so your precious memories are beautifully preserved for generations to come.
